Coffee has been a traded commodity since approximately 1400 CE. From the inception of its use among humans in Ethiopia and Yemen in the late fourteenth century, coffee spread to become an important beverage in the Islamic world. From there, it eventually came to be traded and cultivated by European powers by the 1600s. Later, it became truly global as coffee production spread everywhere from Latin America to Southeast Asia. Today, coffee continues to be cultivated in various tropical regions and is consumed practically everywhere on the globe.
