Texts

The only text you'll need to begin with is

Sidwell, Keith. Reading Medieval Latin. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1995.

It is available at the Literary Gullotine.

There is a dictionary in the back of this text for medieval usages, but you will also need a classical Latin dictionary; if you don't have one, I'd suggest

Traupman, John. The Bantam New College Latin & English Dictionary. Third Revised Edition. New York: Bantam, 2007.

This one sells for $5.99 on amazon.com.

Class Requirements

Be in class every time, on time, with all assignments prepared. This is a large group of students, but I still want to hear you all translating from time to time. We will have frequent quizzes on translation (including pop quizzes) and, if I deem it necessary, on vocabulary and morphology as well. Any such quizzes will be part of your class participation and preparedness grade. Grades will be calculated as follows: class participation and preparedness (35%), three tests (25%), class presentation (15%), and final paper (25%). There will be no final exam. Some possible in-class presentation topics have been listed on our assignments page, and I can suggest others to you, or you can come up with your own. These "talks" are designed to be an introduction to a topic for the rest of your class, and should last from 5-10 minutes. You can use slides, give out handouts (consult me for xeroxing) or post to our website. You will hand in a bibliography of the sources you consulted in preparing your talk.

Assignments will also be posted regularly on our assignments page.

Office Hours and Contact Info

Office hours will be Tuesday from 12-2 p.m. in 240 Cowell, and by appointment. The best way to reach me outside of office hours is by email, at jklynn@ucsc.edu.

ADA Info

If you qualify for classroom accommodations because of a disability, please get an
Accommodation Authorization from the Disability Resource Center (DRC) and submit it
to me in person outside of class (e.g., office hours) within the first two weeks of the
quarter. Contact the DRC at 459-2089 (voice), 459-4806 (TTY), or http://drc.ucsc.edu for
more information on the requirements and/or process.
