Latin 1 Assignments Fall 2014
Assignments are due on the date listed.
- Friday October 3 Bring your Unit 1 textbook to class.
- Monday October 6 Reread the stories from Stage 1 and read About the Language and culture sections from Stage 1, "Caecilius," "Metella," and "Houses in Pompeii," and Stage 2, "Daily Life." Learn all Stage 1 vocabulary and begin learning Stage 2 vocabulary.
- Wednesday October 8 Reread the stories from Stage 2; read About the Language and do Practicing the Language A-C; learn Stage 2 vocabulary; read the culture section from Stage 3, "The Town of Pompeii," and begin learning the Stage 3 vocabulary. Vocab quiz on Stages 1-2; sample here.
- Friday October 10 Reread the stories from Stage 3; read About the Language and do Practicing the Language A-C; learn Stage 3 vocabulary; read the culture section from Stage 4, "The Forum," and begin learning the Stage 4 vocabulary. Quiz on the nominative and accusative of first, second, and third declension nouns (see the Stage 3 About the Language section); we will use ancilla, servus, and leō. Sample here. Remember, I can ask for either the nominative or the accusative!
- Monday October 13 Reread the stories from Stage 4; carefully prepare "in basilicā" (we will perform it!); read About the Language and do Practicing the Language A-C. Read the culture section from Stage 5, "The Theater at Pompeii."
- Tuesday October 14 at noon. First chance to sign up for free tutoring! The link to sign up and more information available at the UCSC Learning Support Services (LSS) website: http://www2.ucsc.edu/lss/tutorial_services.shtml. Our tutor for this year is Kat Jackman.
- Wednesday October 15 Reread/finish Stage 5 "actōrēs" and learn Stage 5 vocab. Read Stage 5 About the Language I and II. Do Stage 5 Practicing the Language A-C. Hedrick's class should also read "Poppaea." Read Stage 6 culture section, "Slaves and Freedmen." Big quiz: noun forms (ancilla, servus, and leō again, but now with nominatives plural) and verb forms (just the forms we know of labōrō). Sample here.
- Friday October 17 Reread the stories from Stage 6 that we read in class. Prepare a translation of "Fēlīx." Read Stage 6 About the Language. Do Stage 6 Practicing the Language B. Learn Stage 6 vocab. Read Stage 7 culture section, "Roman Beliefs About Life and Death."
- Monday October 20 Reread Stage 7 "fābula mīrābilis," and translate "Decēns" (write out your translation). Read both About the Language sections and do Practicing the Language A-C. Learn Stage 7 vocab. Read Stage 8 culture sections: "Gladiatorial Shows," "Animal Hunt," and " The Riot at Pompeii." Quiz on vocab Stages 1-6.
- Wednesday October 22 Reread what we read in class. Translate (write out your translation!) Stage 7 "animal ferōx" and "Metella et Melissa" (Lynn's class has already done "animal "ferōx"). Make sure that your translation is careful and precise. Pay extra attention to verb tense: present, perfect, and imperfect verbs. Read Stage 8 culture sections if you did not finish them for Wednesday. Learn all vocab from checklists through Stage 8.
- Friday October 24 Quiz on noun forms; sample here. Read over the stories we read in class. Read Stage 8 About the Language I and II. Write out a careful and precise translation of "in arēnā" (Hedrick's class) and "vēnātiō" (both classes). Do Practicing the Language A-B. Read Stage 9 culture section, "The Baths."
- Monday October 27 Quiz on noun forms from Stage 9; sample here. Write out the rest of the translation of "in tabernā" (Hedrick's class). Prepare a good tranlsation of "in apodytēriō," paying careful attention to tense of verbs and cases of nouns. Do PTL A-B. Learn all the new vocab and read Stage 10 culture section, "Education."
- Wednesday October 29 Quiz on present tense forms of portō and sum (see Stage 10 About the Language I); sample here. Translate (write it out!) Stage 10 "statuae" and do PTL A-C. Read the Stage 11 culture section, "Local Government and Elections."
- Friday October 31 Quiz on vocab from Stages 1-11! Reread and finish translating Stage 11 "Marcus et Quārtus" (Lynn's section) and do PTL A-B.
- Monday November 3 Reread Stage 11 ""Lūcius Spurius Pompōniānus." Read the Stage 12 culture section, "The Destruction and Excavation of Pompeii." Read the Stage 12 About the Language section and begin learning the new forms presented there in preparation for Wednesday's quiz. Translate the comic that begins Stage 12.
- Wednesday November 5 Quiz on the present, imperfect, and perfect of portō and the present and imperfect of sum. Reread the Stage 12 stories we read in class, and do PTL A-C. Do the online midterm sample, and come in with any questions.
- Friday November 7 Midterm Exam; sample here.
- Monday November 10 Unit 2!!! Read the culture sections at the end of Stage 13. Learn new Stage 13 vocab. Translate the comic that begins Stage 13.
- Wednesday November 12 (Re)read Stage 13 "Bregāns." Make sure you can answer the comprehension questions at the end. Hedrick's section should write out their translation. Translate "Salvius fundum inspicit" and do Stage 13 PTL A-C. Learn Stage 13 vocabulary and take note of the new way that verbs are presented.
- Friday November 14 Quiz on forms of volō, nōlō, and possum; sample here. Read Stage 14 culture section, "Life in Roman Britain." (Re)read Stage 14 "Domitilla cubiculum parat"; Hedrick's class should write down the translation of the portion that wasn't finished in class. Know all Stage 14 vocab. Do Stage 14 PTL A-C.
- Monday November 17 Translate Stage 14 "tripodes argenteī." Read Stage 15 culture section, "The Celts: Friend or Foe?" Read through all of Stage 15, learn the Stage 15 vocab, and try to translate the comic that begins it. Quiz Wednesday on the forms of puella, servus, and leō (nominative, dative, accusative and ablative).
- Wednesday November 19 Quiz on the forms of puella, servus, and leō (nominative, dative, accusative and ablative); sample here. See page 40 (Stage 14 ATL III) for form). Finish Stage 15 "caerimōnia" (write out your translation). Do Stage 15 PTL A-D.
- Friday November 21 Review Stage 15 "lūdī fūnebrēs" (Hedrick's class finish translating it). Learn all vocab checklists through Stage 15. There just might be a pop quiz. Read the Stage 16 culture section, "The Palace at Fishbourne." Practice the present, imperfect, and perfect of portō. We will be adding a new tense, the pluperfect, on Friday.
- Monday November 24 Read Stage 16 About the Language I and II and review "rēx spectāculum dat II." Do PTL A-B. Translate "Quīntus dē sē." Read Stage 17 culture section, "Alexandria."
- Wednesday November 26 In class we will be watching a film, Alexandria (episode 1 of The Ancient World with Bettany Hughes). If you are not in class, you must watch it on your own, either on Netflix (http://www.netflix.com/WiPlayer?movieid=70257044&trkid=1467260&fdvd=true) or on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjQ6lbwN9R8), and fill out this worksheet to be handed in on Monday.

- Monday December 1 Reread Stage 17 "tumultus I" and write out a translation of "tumultus II." Do Stage 17 PTL A, B, and D. Translate "ad templum." Read Stage 18 culture sections, "Glassmaking" and "Egypt."
- Wednesday December 3 Quiz on forms of puella, servus, templum, leō, and nōmen including the genitive (see pages 186-187 for forms; sample here). Translate "in officīnā Eutychī" I and II. Read Stage 19 culture section, "The Worship of Isis."
- Friday December 5 Hedrick's section should finish translating "Prō tabernā Clēmentis." Quiz on forms of portus and rēs (see Stage 18 ATLand pages 186-187 for forms; sample here). Read Stage 19 culture section, "The Worship of Isis." Read the Stage 19 About the Language sections and translate the comic that begins Stage 19 and "Aristō."
- Monday December 8 Translate Stage 19 "pompa." Review the information in Stage 19 About the Language sections I, II, and III. Translate "navis sacra" and do PTL A and C. Learn all Stage 19 vocabulary. Read stage 20 culture section, "Medicine and Science."
- Wednesday December 10 Read through Stage 20 and translate the comic and "remedium astrologī." Study vocabulary checklists through Stage 20!
- Friday December 12 Carefully translate Stage 20 "fortūna crūdēlis" and do PTL A-B. Study vocabulary! Do the practice final and come to class with any questions.
