- Monday April 1 Just show up!
- Wednesday April 3 Stage 32 finish "Euphrosyne revocata" and read "cena Haterii." Read About the Language I, II, and III, and the culture section on Roman Beliefs. Learn new vocab. Remember to sign up for Slug Latin on Quizlet if you haven't already done so.
- Friday April 5 Stage 32 finish "cena Haterii" and review the About the Languages in Stage 32. Read all the English in Stage 33
- Monday April 8 Noun quiz on all five declensions. Sample here; answers here or on pp. 296-7 of Unit 3. Read Stage 33 "Tychicus" and begin to work on verb forms for Wednesday's quiz.
- Wednesday April 10 Verb quiz on the present and future indicative, active and passive. Sample here. Answers are on pp. 311-312 of Unit 3 (the green book), or pp. 305-306 of Unit 4 (the purple book). (Re)read Stage 33 "Tychichus" and "in aulā Domitiānī I" and "in aulā Domitiānī II."
- Friday April 12 Read all the English in Stage 34; learn forms of the present passive infinitive (About the Language I) and review the future passive indicative (About the Language II). Translate "ultiō Epaphrodītī" and "īnsidiae."
- Monday April 15 Finish translating all the readings in Stage 34. Write out your translations. Bring both green and purple books to class.
- Wednesday April 17 Read all the English in Stage 35, paying special attention to indirect statement, especially if you missed class on Monday. Translate "ex urbe" (easier) and "vita rustica" (more difficult).
- Friday April 19 Test 1: sample here. In class, we will finish "vita rustica" and move on to Stage 36 and Martial.
- Monday April 22 Read "Marcus Valerius Martialis" I and II, and scan all the poems. Read all the English in Stage 36, though you should not worry too much about the new subjunctive forms...we'll discuss them in class.
- Wednesday April 24 Finish translating Read "Marcus Valerius Martialis" II (if you have not done so already), and scan all the poems. Then translate "epigrammata Martialis"; scan only those poems which are in elegiac couplets (I, II, III, and V); the others are in hendecasyllables (long long long short short long short long short long either).
- Friday April 26 (Re)read the last of the poems in "epigrammata Martialis" and scan it (it is in hendecasyllables...see above). Then read the "About the Language" sections in Stage 37 (pp. 45 and 49) and Stage 38 (pp. 63 and 66-67). Do Stage 38 Practicing the Language B and C (write your answers out!). Quiz on present and future indicative and present subjunctive, active and passive. Sample here.
- Monday April 29 Finish Stage 38 Practicing the Language C on p. 74, read Stage 39 About the Language I and II and the "versus Ovidiani" on pp. 89-90. Try to scan at least the first 4 lines (all dactylic hexameters).
- Wedneday May 1 Finish the "versus Ovidiani" from Stage 39 on pp. 89-90. Read the "About the Language sections from Stage 40-41 and translate the poem by Phaedrus on p. 150 which begins Stage 42 (don't scan).
- Friday May 3 Scan and translate the Catullus poem on p. 154, translate the Horace poem on p. 155, and translate the Ovid poem on p. 159. Read the About the Language sections in Stage 42.
- Monday May 6 Translate the Ovid (it's in elegiac couplets) on p. 159 and the Vergil (it's in dactylic hexameter) on p. 160.
- Wednesday May 8 Test 2, including a verb to be conjugated and two nouns to be declined, a few "sight" sentences (ones you haven't seen before) and several lines of "seen" translation (poems we have done beginning April 22).
- Friday May 10 Make sure that you have finished the Vergil in Stage 42, and read all the About the Language and culture sections in Stage 43.
- Monday May 13 Begin reading the "matrona ephesia" in Stage 43. We need to move through this one quickly, so please make sure to come prepared!
- Wednesday May 15 Continue with the "matrona ephesia."
- Friday May 17 Interrogative pronoun and adjective quiz; finish "matrona ephesia" in Stage 43.
- Monday May 20 Test 3, including the Vergil in 42 (be able to scan) and the "matrona ephesia" in 43, plus the usual noun declension and verb conjugation.
- Wednesday May 22 Read the About the Language and culture sections in Stage 44 and 45. Read the first two Catullus poems in Stage 45 ("ille par mi" and "vivamus mea Lesbia"). Don't scan...we will talk about the scansion of the poems in class (the first is in Sapphic stanzas, the second in hendecasyllables). Quiz on the UNUS NAUTA words (ullus, nullus, uter, solus, neuter, alius, unus, totus, alter) we went over in class on Friday.
- Friday May 24 Read the other Catullus poems in Stage 45, and we are really having that UNUS NAUTA quiz.
- Monday May 27 (Holiday)
- Wednesday May 29 Rough draft of paper due (bring two copies). Continue with the Catullus poems in Stage 45.
- Friday May 31 Test 4, including the Catullus in Stage 45 through VII (be able to scan those in elegiac couplets), plus the usual noun declension and verb conjugation. Bring the papers you have edited for your peers to class to reexchange with them.
- Monday June 3 Finish the "miser Catulle" poem in Stage 45 and consider the movement of the poem...to whom is the speaker talking? Why does he break off at the end and address himself once more?
- Wednesday June 5 Final draft of paper due. Work on your translations of poem 50 (hesterno die) begun in class (handout on eCommons or here), and translate Catullus 58 and 16 (handout on eCommons or here)
- Friday June 7
