- Friday October 3 Bring your text!
- Monday October 6 Practice reading the words in the Drills in the handout I gave you in class. If you'd like an audio file of me reading the answers, here you are: Drill I, Drill II, Drill III. Review the material in the Athenaze introduction. Practice reading the story on page xix of the introduction. Link to an audio file of the story here. (Note that the reader uses a pitch accent and pronounces φ, χ and θ as aspirates rather than fricatives.) Write the Greek alphabet again and again...remember, we don't care about capital letters yet!
- Wednesday October 8 Practice rereading the beginning of the story from 1α that we read in class on Monday. Then read the rest of the story, and write out a translation of the whole thing. Do exercise 1α (no need to label the functions of words, however). Learn all the vocab from the list at the beginning of 1α and start to study the vocab at the start of 1β. We will have a 1α and 1β vocab quiz on Friday. Sample here. Sample answers here.
- Friday October 10 1α and 1β vocab quiz (sample here)! Reread the story from 1β that we finished in class. Do exercise 1β and exercise 1γ. Read the piece about slavery at the end of 2α.
- Monday October 13 Finish the story that begins 2α. Read the grammar sections; do exercises 2α and 2β. Learn vocab at the beginning of 2α.

- Wednesday October 15 Translate the story that begins 2β. Read through the remainder of the chapter, but don't worry too much...we will go over the information on the use of the cases and on accentuation in class. Learn the vocab at the beginning of 2β. Quiz on verb forms (παιδεύω and φιλέω); sample here.
- Friday October 17 Reread the language info in 2β, now that we have gone over it in class. Do exercises 2δ, 2ε, and 2ζ. Read the story ὁ δοῦλος at the end of 2β. Quiz on forms of ὁ καλὸς ἀγρός and τὸ καλὸν δένδρον on page 20; sample here.
- Monday October 20 Finish the story that begins chapter 3α. Read language information in chapter 3α and read the culture section, "The Deme and the Polis." Do exercise 3α. Learn new vocab.
- Wednesday October 22 Read the story that begins chapter 3β. Learn new plural forms in "Grammar" section (quiz on these Friday). Do exercises 3γ and 3δ. Learn new vocab.
- Friday October 24 Translate the story that begins chapter 4α. Read through the rest of the chapter, and begin to learn new verb and noun forms. Quiz on verb forms (through 3β); sample here.
- Monday October 27 Begin learning forms of nouns of the first declension.Do exercises 4β, 4γ, 4δ, and 4ε. Quiz on verb forms (through 4β); sample here.
- Wednesday October 29 Quiz on nouns of the first declension (ἡ κρήνη, ἡ ὑδρίᾱ, ἡ μέλιττᾰ, and ἡ μάχαιρᾰ). Finish the story that begins 4β, and read the information in the rest of the chapter. Translate the Callimachus and NT readings at the end of the chapter.
- Friday October 31 Finish translating the story that begins 5α. Read the rest of chapter 5α. Do exercises 5β, 5γ (uncontract each form, make it singular or plural according to the directions, then recontract), and 5δ. Read culture section, "Gods and Men."
- Monday November 3 Quiz on the present active indicative, imperative, and infinitive of τῑμάω, φιλέω, and παιδεύω (just like our last verb quiz, but with τῑμάω added in). Read through chapter 5β and translate the story that begins it. Begin learning the forms of the personal pronoun, the possessive pronouns, and αὐτός, αὐτή, αὐτόν.
- Wednesday November 5 Quiz on vocab through chapter 5; do exercises 5ζ, 5η, and 5θ.

- Monday November 10 Read through chapter 6α and translate the story that begins it.
- Wednesday November 12 Reread chapter 6α and begin learning middle forms of τῑμάω, φιλέω, and παιδεύω. Do exercises 6γ, 6δ, 6ε, and 6ζ. Read the culture section on "Myth."
- Friday November 14 Quiz on middle forms of τῑμάω, φιλέω, and παιδεύω; sample here. Midterm corrections due; blanks here. Remember that to earn 3/4 credit, you must fill out the forms twice and hand them in along with your original midterm. Translate the rest of the story that begins 6β. Do exercises 6ι, 6λ, and 6μ.
- Monday November 17 Read the culture section on "Homer" at the end of chapter 7α. Read through chapter 7α, and translate the story that begins it. Begin to learn the forms of ὁ φύλαξ, ὁ αἴξ, ὁ παῖς, and τὸ ὄνομα (quiz Wednesday).
- Wednesday November 1 Quiz on the forms of the forms of ὁ φύλαξ, ὁ αἴξ, ὁ παῖς, and τὸ ὄνομα. Finish the story that begins chapter 7β. Read through the chapter and do exercises 7ζ and 7η.
- Friday November 21 Read the Stage 8α culture section, "Athens: A Historical Outline." Review the forms of the present middle participle. Translate the story that begins chapter 8α and do exercise 8β.
- Monday November 24 Review the new noun forms in chapter 8β; remember, while you will not have to produce them, you need to be able to identify them. Read through the information on numbers and expressions of time; we will discuss these further on Monday. Translate the story that begins 8β. Catch up on vocabulary!
- Wednesday November 26 In class, we will watch a portion of the PBS documentary The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization (we will watch the portion that covers the rise of Pericles through the end of the Peoloponnesian War). If you cannot attend, watch on your own, either via Amazon Prime (it is season 7 of the PBS series Empires, which is listed on Amazon as a single more-than-2-hour-long episode; watch from 1:19:38, the rise of Pericles, to 2:06:00, the fall of Athens) or on YouTube: the end of Episode 2 (start at 36:35) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GZN_qCmARs) and the beginning of Episode 3 (watch from start until 39:46).(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08UtxuyI9ok). - Monday December 1 Review the information in chapter 8β on numbers and expresions of time. Do exercises 8ζ and 8η. Look over chapter 9α and read the culture section, "The City of Athens." Translate the story that begins 9α.
- Wednesday December 3 Make sure you are caught up with vocabulary study (through chapter 9β). Do exercises 9γ and 9δ. Translate the story that begins chapter 9β (try to finish it, but at least get to line 20).
- Friday December 5 Quiz on the forms of the present active participle: ὤν, παιδεύων, φιλῶν, and τῑμῶν. Finish translating the story that begins chapter 9β. Read "Uses of the Genitive Case" on page 147 and do exercise 9ζ. Sample here.
- Monday December 8 Do the English-to-Greek sentences in Exercise 9ζ. Check out the "Review of Verb Forms" on pages 152-153, and then read through chapter 10α and translate the story that begins it. Learn the 10α vocabulary and read the culture section on "Festivals."
- Wednesday December 10 Read through chapter 10β and do exercises 10ι and 10λ. Translate the story that begins chapter 10β.
- Friday December 12 Do chapter 10β exercises 10η and 10θ and read Ο ΟΔΥΣΣΕΥΣ ΤΟΥΣ ΕΤΑΙΡΟΥΣ ΑΠΟΛΛΥΣΙΝ.
